Great Blue Heron Perhaps the most common of the North America's wading birds, the Great Blue Heron is a study in dichotomy. Beautiful and graceful, yet a voice so harsh and grating that it can only be described in a pneumonic as ggrrraaaaannnkk. And even though they are quite common, there are still things we need to learn about the Great Blue Heron. Subscribe to One Bird At A Time and you'll not only get our profile of the Great Blue Heron, but we'll send you the last installment of this great series - our nation's symbol, the Bald Eagle. Single species accounts are also available. So, if Great Blue Herons are some of your favorite birds, you don't have to get a subscription to the entire series. Just order your single copy below. This second 2011 installment of the One Bird At A Time series will be available April 1. Order yours, either by subscription or single copy below. |

There is no doubt that birders have a thirst for more and more knowledge, not only about birds, but, increasingly, about the rest of the natural world around them. Scientific knowledge abounds on many of our bird species, but, unfortunately, scientists have a hard time passing their knowledge onto the general public. It's not their fault; they were trained to write the way they write. The problem lies is the disconnect between the general American public and science. There is, for lack of a better term, a language barrier between scientists and the public.
Another problem lies in the fact that way too often politics plays a role where it should have no business. Because of this alone, it has become more and more important for the general public, the voters in this country, to better understand issues (as well as be able to see through the political rhetoric) to make well-informed decisions at the ballot box.
Finally, science does not have the resources to study
everything that needs to be investigated in the avian world (or any other
discipline for that matter). But birders are extremely lucky in that they do not
have to depend on science for everything.
Birders,
as a whole, are extremely intelligent and more than able to make scientific
contributions on their own. All they need is to be pointed in the right
direction.
These are the reasons that prompted Bird Country US to begin the development of our newest educational effort: One Bird At A Time. In short, we look at as much of the scientific and popular literature that we can muster on a given species and write an account for that species that all birders can understand. And the first installment of this series is now available absolutely FREE to you.
The Reddish Egret is the least numerous of all of our herons, egrets, and their allies. Unfortunately, we cannot tell you why their numbers are as low as they are because so little is known about the life history of this bird.
