BirdCountry.US State Bird Lists

Many birders all over the world keep lists. Some lists are short and simple, while others are extremely detailed. The fact is there are about as many different bird lists as there are reasons for keeping those lists. Many people in BirdCountry.US keep United States lists, checking off only those birds that they have seen in the United States. Many others keep state lists - a list of birds that they have seen in a particular state. Others keep county lists, yard lists, year lists, month lists, day lists, and the list of lists goes on and on. And, of course, we cannot forget the big one - the life list - the list of all the birds one has seen in his or her lifetime. State lists, life lists and yard lists are probably the most common types of these lists.

These lists can take on a multitude of looks from simple checkmarks in your favorite field guide to listing software on your personal computer to national and global databases where you enter your information along with millions of others but you can still retrieve just your own information or any combination of information you desire.

These are the types of lists that birders keep, but virtually everyone of them finds its basis in the official bird list for a person's own state. In fact, the most two most common lists that birders ask for are the official North America list and the official list for a particular state. While many of these people ask for lists for their own state, many folks also ask for the state bird lists for places they might be visiting while on vacation, or on a business trip, or numerous other types of trips that take them to another state.

Now, you can go to this single page on the BirdCountry.US website and download the bird list for nearly all of the Lower 48 states and the official 2008 BirdCountry.US Checklist of North American Birds. If you find a current list for any of the state's that are missing, please let us know and we'll see if we can make it available. All state lists are in PDF format, so Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free download) is required.

BirdCountry.US cannot take responsibility for the accuracy of these lists, but every effort has been made to find the "official" lists for these states. Also, there have been numerous changes in common names, scientific names and taxonomic order of birds in recent years and more are sure to come. It is generally the responsibility of the various state records committees to keep these lists up to date. However, lack of funds, time, and other resources may prevent a particular state's committee from staying as current as we would sometimes like. If you find an out-of-date list, please consider donating your time, effort, or other resources to that state's committee to help them stay current. Should you find a more up-to-date list than what is available here, please let us know and we'll see if we can make it available for you on this same page.

Bookmark this page today; you'll want to come back time and time again. And while you're here, you might want to check out the selection of field guides covering all of these states by visiting the BirdCountry.US e-Store today.
